Tomás Borge Martínez (pictured) is one of the giants of the 21st century even if his influence was exerted mostly in and through that small but proud Central American country that we all admire: Nicaragua.
Tomás Borge Martínez died tonight at the venerable age of 82 years in the eve of yet another May Day.
Borge founded along with other Nicaraguan patriots and revolutionaries the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) which struggled for years against one of the most corrupt dictatorships of America, a puppet regime of the Pentagon, and won, establishing a democracy with socialist outlook that inspired the World in the 1980s as they had to fight with large terrorist fascist organizations (the Contra) financed by the most powerful empire of our time: the United States of America of Ronald Reagan.
In that time Tomás Borge was Minister of Interior a charge that never eroded his popularity nor the respect generally granted to him. He was also a writer (both in prose and poetry) and was for long vice-secrertary general of the FSLN.
During the imperial reign of George Bush Sr., the Empire essentially blackmailed Nicaraguans on keeping the embargo and the dirty war unless they voted fascist leader Violeta Chamorro in. That way the Sandinista rule came to an end for some time.
However in 2006 and within the context of greater left-wing gains all around Latin America, the Sandinistas came back to power again with wide popular support. As veteran member of the FSLN, Tomás Borges was national deputy until his death.
Nicaragua has decreed three days of national duel.
