Turkey: protests extend across the country after brutal police repression

Tens of thousands marched today through many Turkish cities in protest against the police brutality employed to evict a protest camp at the touristic Taksim Square of Istanbul, injuring at least 12.

The original protest denounced the excessive construction in the old city of the Bosporus at the expense of green and public leisure areas, in particular a construction project in Gazi Park, one of the main green areas of Istanbul.

The repression has backfired with the protests extending through the country, demanding now the resignation of the Prime Minister, the reactionary Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
